Shifting Paradigms: The Strategic Significance of Interdisciplinary Approaches in Contemporary Islamic Studies

Abstract

Traditional Islamic scholarship often faces a critical challenge in maintaining relevance amidst the rapid complexities of modern society, frequently being confined to normative-textual interpretations that struggle to address empirical social issues. This stagnation creates an intellectual gap between religious doctrine and contemporary reality. This study aims to analyze the strategic significance of interdisciplinary research in shifting Islamic studies from a parochial-normative paradigm to a dynamic-contextual framework, capable of providing innovative solutions to global challenges. Using a qualitative library research method with a conceptual analysis approach, this study synthesizes diverse literature across sociology, anthropology, economics, and history. The analysis employs a deductive-inductive technique to evaluate the intersection of Islamic principles with modern scientific methodologies. The findings indicate that an interdisciplinary approach effectively bridges the gap between religious normativity (normativitas) and social historicity (historisitas). Strategically, this approach operationalizes Islamic values to address systemic issues such as poverty through the integration of Islamic distributive justice with modern economic theories. Furthermore, it fosters an "ecological khalifah" paradigm to combat environmental crises and provides a critical filter against Orientalist biases by emphasizing the scientific accuracy of revelation. The research highlights that interdisciplinary studies encourage a renewal (tajdid) of Islamic thought by challenging traditional assumptions and promoting a holistic, non-dichotomous understanding of knowledge. Shifting to an interdisciplinary paradigm is a fundamental necessity for contemporary Islamic scholarship. It transforms religion from a static doctrine into a strategic catalyst for social justice, environmental sustainability, and intellectual enlightenment in the modern era.
