Purpose – This study examines Lomba Agustusan, a popular Indonesian Independence Day competition tradition, from the perspective of Fikih Kebangsaan. It addresses the legal and ethical status of these competitions when conducted either as an expression of gratitude and remembrance of national heroes or merely as entertainment.
Design/methods/approach – This study employs qualitative library research with a normative approach. Primary sources consist of classical Islamic jurisprudential texts discussing gratitude, competitions, social interaction, and general principles of mu‘āmalāt. Contemporary journal articles and related scholarly sources are used to contextualize the analysis. Data were examined through content analysis and descriptive-interpretative analysis within the framework of Fikih Kebangsaan.
Findings – The study finds that Lomba Agustusan conducted as an expression of gratitude for independence and respect for national heroes contains positive religious and civic values. Competitions conducted merely for entertainment remain basically permissible because such activities fall within the sphere of mu‘āmalāt, especially when they strengthen social relationships, solidarity, unity, and legitimate joy. However, their permissibility is conditional and may change when they involve gambling (qimār/maysir), unlawful exposure of the ‘awrah, inappropriate gender mixing leading to fitnah, harm, humiliation, fraud, or injustice.
Research implications/limitations – The study offers a normative framework for evaluating national cultural traditions, but it is limited to textual and doctrinal analysis without empirical investigation of community practices.
Originality/value – This study integrates Islamic legal reasoning, local cultural tradition, and national values through the framework of Fikih Kebangsaan.
